About the Role


Lead, support and deliver all communications and engagement activities through a number of embedded functions with business groups for one of New Zealand's leading social sector agencies.


We are looking for a transformational leader who will take responsibility for the strategic direction of MSD communications through leadership of a broader communications strategy, media and public affairs activities.


This pivotal and influential role is responsible for the leadership of MSD wide communications and engagement strategy and delivery, lead cross MSD initiatives and provide advice to the Leadership team. You will also play a significant role in improving the impact of communications and engagement internally and externally.


Skills and Experience


To be successful in the role, you will have:


  • Strong experience in managing a communications function
  • People Leadership experience – ability to lead, motivate and manage a high performing team
  • Public sector experience with in depth understanding of government structures and processes
  • A collaborative working style and the ability to understand the big picture
  • Experience in building strategic relationships and being a credible/trusted voice at a senior leadership level.

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is the lead agency for the social sector.  MSD provides policy advice, and delivers social services and assistance to young people, working age people, older people, and families, whānau and communities.  We work directly with New Zealanders of all ages to improve their social wellbeing.

About the Team

The Communications and Engagement team support the Ministry's wider communications community and specialise in media, internal, public, social media and publishing communications. We are beginning a significant piece of change as we shape the future of the Ministry's communications and engagement programmes.
