Job Description

The TEC – Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua is a small Crown agency with a big job to do: ensuring all New Zealanders can gain the skills and the knowledge they need to build a great life and ensure New Zealand thrives.

We're seeking a Principal Advisor to work on key projects in our Operational Strategy team for a fixed-term contract to June 2021. The team's focus is on developing 1-2 year initiatives that are aligned with achieving the TEC's longer-term goals and the Government's Tertiary Education Strategy. It has close links to the teams responsible for products, services, investment, and sector engagement.

What will you be doing?

  • Helping to develop and communicate our strategic priorities for our annual $2.8 billion investment round.
  • Leading operational strategy projects to actively shape and influence the tertiary education and careers system to achieve our longer-term strategic goals.
  • Using data and information from our customers – learners, industry bodies, education providers and others in the public sector – to develop implementable strategies.
  • Working closely with the Ōritetanga – Learner Success Team to make a significant difference for Māori and Pacific learners.
  • Engaging at senior levels across the TEC and with other agencies such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

What can you bring?

  • Strategy or implementation experience at a Principal level – ideally you will have led successful public sector projects.
  • Stakeholder management skills that enable you to get the most out of interactions with colleagues and customers.
  • Ability to select and synthesise data and information to support the development of strategies and options.
  • Ability to coach and mentor more junior members of the team.
  • Knowledge of public policy and the tertiary education and careers systems.

What will you get in return?

  • The chance to make a significant impact on a newly established team operating in an environment that is ready for change. Your strategies will have a meaningful, direct effect on tertiary education and careers products and services in the coming 1-2 years.
  • $118k-145k+, depending on relevant experience.
  • The TEC offers a range of benefits including, flexible working options, a wellness programme and the ability to purchase extra leave.
