The purpose of the role

This General Manager position within Stats NZ is permanent, but considered an assignment, normally around 5 year duration. You will initially be assigned to complete the 2018 Census, and, subject to a successful business case, lead the census following 2018.

As the General Manager - Census you will be accountable for the following:

  • Leading the continued modernisation of census processes, systems, and public interaction
  • Ensuring the successful completion of a modernised 2018 Census and lead the business case and set up for the next census
  • Managing the census as an effective and coordinated programme that delivers statistical data to the required quality, on time and within budget.
  • Leading people within the Census Branch of the Insights and Statistics Group
  • Ensuring a high degree of leverage and integration between census and the rest of the Stats NZ organisation

Person specifications

As a General Manager your focus will be to provide sound organisation-wide leadership to ensure that your part of the business operates effectively and efficiently, and you will work collectively you're your colleagues to deliver on Stats NZ's strategic priorities.

You will:

  • demonstrate strong leadership and personal integrity and a desire to drive Statistics NZ forward
  • be intellectually, analytically and conceptually agile and experienced in dealing with complex matters
  • have experience in managing, motivating and developing a multi-disciplinary workforce and harnessing the talents of employees at all levels. At least five to 10 years' experience in senior leadership
  • have strong senior or general management background and/or experience in leading complex ICT-enabled business programmes
  • have proven ability to manage across all levels in an organisation and maintain strong working relationships across organisation.
