Policy Manager - Regional Development


Are you an experienced Policy Manager looking for your next challenge?


We are looking for a strategic people leader to build a new Regional Development policy team and shape the team's work programme.


The Regional Development team will bring expertise and develop advice on regional considerations and approaches to delivering in key priority areas.  This will include identifying and linking strategic opportunities across many domains including community development, urban and rural issues, employment, housing, local/national jurisdictions of responsibility and areas of intersection.

More about the role


As the Regional Development Policy Manager, you will be responsible for leading a team of 4 to 6 policy analysts. There may be opportunity for your team to grow depending on the work programme that is developed.


The team will sit within the Social Development, Child & Youth policy group, alongside the Social Sector and the Child & Youth policy teams.


Your role will be to work with key internal and external stakeholders to develop the strategic direction of the work programme and ensure the Regional Development team delivers timely and quality policy advice. The work programme will contribute to the broader objectives of the Policy Branch, the work of the Ministry and the priorities of Government. 


You will develop and maximise the capability of your team members, providing them with opportunities to grow their skills, knowledge and confidence. You and your team will have the professional support of Principal Policy Analysts to ensure the work is of a high standard and complex processes or strategic issues are well managed.


Things we are looking for in applicants


  • Experience leading in a strategic environment and building relationships across a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience producing and recognising high quality policy work
  • Experience developing and managing high performing teams, with a focus on fostering a supportive team culture
  • Developed skills in building the performance of individuals through coaching and attention to professional development
  • An appropriate tertiary qualification or considerable, relevant practical experience
  • Knowledge and confidence in one or more areas of social policy
  • A good understanding of policy implementation and the issues likely to impact on it
  • Commitment to further strengthening the Māori/Crown relationship in ways such as building your own and your team's competencies in Te Tiriti analysis, employing appropriate engagement methods and consideration/application of frameworks such as whānau centred and Kaupapa Māori
  • Knowledge, experience or expertise in regional issues or community development would be a great asset.
