Senior Payroll Officer
• Full-time permanent, secondment or fixed term to 31 March 2023; potential for extension

About our team
Our dedicated payroll professionals are a crucial team that sits within our People and Capability (HR) business unit. We provide quality support, advice and payroll services as part of a wider HR Shared Services team to over 15,300 staff across the Ministry's National Office and business service lines and shared services to Oranga Tamariki (OT) and Social Wellbeing Agency (SWA).
About the role
The payroll manager is passionate about both payroll and people and is looking new team members who feel the same way. This position is based in our HR business unit, it's all about the people as well as and less about the numbers. We're more interested in your ability to grasp concepts and ideas and apply your analytical mind to problem-solving for the wider team.
As a Ministry we operate a fortnightly pay run that pays 15,300 employees, which means we're busy throughout the year. Resilience, teamwork and a customer-focused attitude will set you up for success.
Great opportunity to play a vital role in the payroll team. You will be recognised as a senior payroll practitioner responsible for supporting our payroll officers and will be the “go to “person within the team and the wider HR teams to provide support, advice and solutions for complex HR/Payroll matters.
You will also lead key projects of work and always be looking at ways we can improve our processes to make them as streamlined and efficient as possible.
An overview of your responsibilities:
• Collaborate with team leaders to provide mentoring and support to payroll officers around complex issues and provide specialist payroll support
• Support team leaders with the induction and training of new payroll officers
• Drive a culture of high trust customer service and contribute to improvements of policies and practices
• Work with team leaders on payroll audits, quality assurance and risk management activities
To succeed in the role, you will have:
• An advanced understanding of payroll operations and systems
• Extensive knowledge of relevant legislations
• Proven experience at identifying and enhancing opportunities
• Demonstrated experience participating in projects and workshops
• An ability to see the big picture from a payroll team perspective
As a seasoned and established payroll officer in the team, you will be someone who is looking to take the next step in your career. You will have an excellent understanding of how the payroll team operates, you often provide suggestions and solutions for improvements to the work you and your team do and up to date with payroll related legislation.
