Te Mana Whakamaru Tamariki Motuhake, the Independent Children's Monitor, monitors the Oranga Tamariki System, highlighting areas that will drive continuous improvement and support improving outcomes for children and young people, particularly tamariki Māori. Our review, analysis and reporting provides regular, robust and independent insights on the performance of the System to a range of audiences including Ministers, government agencies, iwi, non-government agencies, whānau and individuals.

Aroturuki Tamariki (The Independent Children's Monitor) provides independent oversight across services provided under the Oranga Tamariki Act, 1989. New legislation means the Monitor's role is being extended and we need to grow our team.
Its primary role is to monitor those organisations that deliver services under the Oranga Tamariki Act, including Oranga Tamariki, NZ Police, health and education. We engage with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and caregivers as well as kaimahi working in the community for Iwi and Māori services, NGOs and government agencies to see how services are performing.

As a Kaiaroturuki – Monitor, you are the public face of the Monitor. As “monitors” you spend most of your time working in small groups, engaging with the community to understand and record the experience of children and their families, professionals, caregivers and others who participate in the lives of tamariki and rangatahi. Understanding the context and intricacies of this work and the role of whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships) and manaakitanga (showing respect, generosity and care) is essential. Regular travel throughout New Zealand is required, supported by a flexible working environment.
Ngā tino pūkenga– Essential skills for the role
We're looking for two kaimahi who, along with their values base, bring experience working at an operational level and provide sound analysis. Ideally you will have experience in either social services, education or health, or youth justice along with local community knowledge and responsive and appropriate skills gained in working with Māori, Pacific and vulnerable communities. A background in monitoring is an advantage, however an openness and commitment to mahi tahi in a te ao Māori way is essential.
Your skillset includes:
- Ability to build trusting relationships with a wide range of people and organisations
- Excellent writing skills that reflect an ability to write for different audiences
- Empathy and the ability to adapt to complexity in situations and circumstances
- An analytical and curious mind that will consider a range of data to support conclusions
- Excellent time management skills
- An ability to turnaround information quickly and succinctly
Please note: there is an expectation of the role that you will be able to commit to regular travel nationwide.
