Job Description

  • Wellington or Christchurch Fixed Term to September or December 2018
  • Flexible working hours
  • Internal and external training programmes on offer

We are looking for two senior analysts to join our 2018 Census Customer Focus business unit. The business unit is delivering three major projects for 2018 Census that are shaping the future of Stats NZ processing, and product and data services so it's a chance to influence and guide this important area. We are looking for two talented people wanting an opportunity to innovate, and influence methods and solutions, and ensure projects are well connected inside and outside of Statistics NZ.

The census is the official count of people in New Zealand, and the places in which they live. Census information is used by central government, councils, community groups, iwi and business to plan for the future. The next census will be held on 6 March 2018 and we will be undertaking the largest transformation to the way we do things that we have ever done.

There is potential for each analyst to be involved in a range of work within the business unit but also making connections across the programme as we lead up to the processing operations and production of innovative products and data services.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Customer Focus, the role is a senior advisor and technical expert (excluding IT) working for the business unit and across within projects and across the programme to support delivery of fit for purpose business processes and solutions. Subject matter knowledge, integration, quality, and skills development of statistical analysts are also important elements. As a member of the leadership team, the person will work closely with the managers in the unit and other Senior Analysts across 2018 Census and the wider organisation.

Role in business unit:

  • Champions application of thinking end to end across the census programme and Statistics NZ
  • Subject matter expert in identifying information needs, processing operations and/or product development
  • Surfaces statistical, technical and business gaps, opportunities and risks and then work for projects to deliver solutions
  • Coaches, mentors and helps to identify and provide technical development needs for statistical analysts and business unit
  • Forms strong on-going relationships with key identified internal and external customers
  • Works with other Senior Analysts to implement programme initiatives including taking responsibility for some shared or coordinated approaches
  • Takes active role to communicate important information from advisory roles to other parts of census programme or organisation

We encourage you to apply for the role if you have:

  • analytical and creative problem solving skills
  • subject matter knowledge of statistics production, information needs, processing and/or product development
  • strong technical skills in working with large datasets and with statistical programming applications experience (e.g. particularly R or SAS)
  • showing systems-wide thinking and a desire to work collaboratively to solve conceptually challenging problems
  • enthusiasm for mentoring and coaching
  • great team skills, personal resilience and the confidence to create strong working relationships.

If you have a good customer focus, enjoy connecting and communicating with others, and are switched on with loads of initiative then we want to hear from you. Statistics New Zealand is an organisation with a strong reputation where you will have the opportunity to work alongside great people on interesting work.
