Job Description

Statistical Methods are looking for a Senior Researcher to provide technical leadership and build capability in Statistical Computing.

The aim of this role is to:

  • increase the value of statistical production systems through automation
  • demonstrate the benefits of automation in statistical production systems
  • champion best practice in statistical computing and programming standards
  • identify efficiencies and improvements in monitoring and production systems
  • make connections between outputs and systems to drive value through synergies
  • explore and champion new technology
  • identify and use new data sources to enhance official statistics and provide new insights.

As a Senior Researcher you will contribute to the strategic direction of a Statistical Methods through focused research and analysis. You will also contribute to Statistics New Zealand's international reputation in the Official Statistics System through the publication of high quality research papers and conference presentations.

The role of a Senior Researcher is to:

  • connect, communicate, and influence our strategic direction
  • share your knowledge and expertise to enhance our reputation in the official statistics system
  • develop statistical and research capability, both internally and externally, through technical coaching, relationship management, networking, and sharing knowledge
  • deal with complex issues, ensure they are worked through and solved, and mitigate associated risks
  • promote debate and encourage suggestions for improving ideas and processes
  • promote the integration of ideas and solutions across your subject area, the wider organisation, and other agencies
  • investigate new methodologies to improve existing frameworks and systems.

You will be accountable for the work you do, and contribute positively to the values and outcomes outlined in our strategic plans, including Statistics 2020 - Te Kāpehu Whetū and our Statement of Intent. You will also uphold the aims of the Official Statistics System.

You will work as part of a team of Senior Researchers and Principal Statisticians within the Statistical Methods Research Hub and will report to the Manager - Strategy and Infrastructure.
