Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health and Safety Manager to join our team within the Defence Estate and Infrastructure organisation.
 
The Health and Safety Manager will guide the management and oversight of Health and Safety for the Defence Estate and Infrastructure organisation, functioning as a subject matter expert.  The purpose of this role is to guide Defence Estate and Infrastructure organisation operations at all levels so as to ensure they are able to be performed in a manner consistent with NZDF policy and legislative and regulatory requirements with respect to safety in the workplace. The position will play an important role in championing safety throughout the Defence Estate and Infrastructure organisation and as well as monitoring and reporting on safety performance. It will assist and guide at both the strategic/policy and operational levels.
 
The Health and Safety Manager will have strong knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, related legislation, regulations, related Health & Safety codes of practice and guidelines applicable to the construction industry, as well as experience in the management of safety in a diverse service organisation operating at a managerial level. 

In this role you will be able to apply your experience in the development and implementation of safety policy, frameworks and operational process documentation.  You'll have first-hand knowledge of safety management with in the facilities maintenance and/or construction industry, along with superior relationship development and management skills.

Our ideal candidate has experience in engaging and managing consultants, contractors and service providers, along with the ability to set and maintain a high standard of quality assurance.  Well-developed negotiation skills will be crucial to your success in this role.
 
You will also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a high level of initiative and self-motivation, good computer skills and a relevant tertiary qualification in Health and Safety, business or similar discipline with a graduate diploma in Health and Safety.
 
This role is based in the Wellington Region, which includes Trentham, Upper Hutt and Wellington.

The remuneration band for this position is $90,326 to $111,579, inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution.

  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
