Job Description

Director, Commercial Delivery

The NZ Defence Force is seeking a high calibre procurement professional to manage a large team providing procurement and contract expertise. This is an important leadership role with the opportunity to build capability and lead change.

Reporting to the Assistant Chief, Commercial, the Director, Commercial Delivery leads a group of Procurement and Contracts Specialists and the Contract Relationship Management team. Together this group is responsible for providing procurement and contract expertise across a large and varied portfolio of products and services that support NZDF.

NZDF is undergoing a transformation that includes how they undertake procurement activities and how they engage with suppliers. The Director, Commercial Delivery will lead the evolution of this group to establish a Centre of Excellence for procurement & contract management in NZDF.

Candidates will need to be able to communicate a vision and inspire the Commercial Delivery group as well as other stakeholders across NZDF. They will also be passionate about operational excellence and be able to relentlessly drive efficiency and effectiveness.

The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • At least 10 years experience in senior procurement management roles

  • An expert understanding of the machinery of government and the protocols required for government procurement

  • Be innovative and flexible in their approach

  • Demonstrated success in delivering procurement value

  • Have a successful track record as a leader of change

  • Be an experienced leader able to build team capability

  • Commercial acumen and well-developed negotiation skills

  • Solid analytical skills and a calm and methodical approach to problem solving

  • Proven communication skills at all organisational levels

  • A tertiary qualification or CIPS will be highly regarded

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:
Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
