Ko wai mātou? - Who we are

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is a Crown Entity established on 1 July 2017 under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017. The role of our new organisation is to reduce unwanted fires, respond to structural and vegetation fires and other emergencies including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous substance related incidents and natural disasters, and to support increased community resilience.

Our vision is to build stronger communities and protect what matters most to the people within them. We are proud to be recognised as New Zealand's most trusted public sector agency. Our values reflect what our people believe is core to who we are and the organisation we aspire to be:

We Do the Right Thing – Kia Tika

We Serve and Support – Manaakitanga

We Are Better Together – Whanaungatanga

We Strive to Improve – Auahatanga.

Mō tēnei tūranga - About the role

The work we do has meaning. Each day we design and deliver communications that touch the lives of all New Zealander's in some way; whether that's sharing marketing campaigns, helping with station openings and community activities, sharing information about operational changes, educating people in types of mahi we do (it's not just fighting fires) or helping with organisation wide changes. You name it, we're part of it.

Our work is shared both internally (with our 14,000 Fire and Emergency people) and externally with communities across Aotearoa.  We work with a range of projects, programmes and teams and we can guarantee no two days are the same.

During serious events, such as natural disasters, we're often called upon to help with Fire and Emergency's response, providing communications support in a fast-paced environment.

While this role is based at national headquarters (NHQ) in Wellington, you don't have to be.  Fire and Emergency is a part of almost all communities in Aotearoa and we encourage flexible working when possible.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Advisor Communications and Engagement to join our busy team. Reporting to the National Manager Communications and Engagement, you'll be responsible for coordinating and managing reliable, meaningful, and timely communications and engagement support to the Chief Executive and wider leadership team. This role is also expected to provide mentoring, guidance, and support to other team members to ensure best practice communications and engagement advice is consistently delivered to the business.

The salary range for this role is $141,629 - $157,365 depending on your skills and experience.

  • Adept at building collaborative working relationships with a wide range of people and organisations
  • A strong sense of purpose and aspiration to continuously improve how we work
  • The confidence to make this role your own, while always seeking the best outcomes for our key stakeholders, partners, Māori, communities and the wider public.

If you're looking for chance to put your diverse skill set to use in an organisation dedicated to helping our communities, then we'll provide you with a unique opportunity to utilise your knowledge within a supportive team.
