The State Services Commission (SSC) leads the public sector to make a positive difference for New Zealand and New Zealanders.

Are you ready for a role where you can build a higher profile and have impact across the public service?  The Sector and Agency Performance Group is the lead for SSC's engagement with sectors, Chief Executives and Ministers.

As a Deputy Commissioner you will have the opportunity to:  

  • Provide leadership and advocacy for better services for New Zealanders.
  • Contribute to sector and agency strategic development and drive improved performance across the state services.  
  • Manage the employment relationship with public service chief executives.

To be considered for this role you will have proven experience at senior management level (tier 2 or equivalent) and/or consultancy experience advising chief executives or Board chairs. You will have a background in the state sector or have a role in the private sector with exposure to government.  The ideal candidate will be a seasoned operator who is able to quickly establish credibility with Chief Executives, Ministers, Board Chairs and other senior leaders and stakeholders.  You will be highly motivated by an environment that operates in a spirit of service with a focus on people and performance.  

You will also be:

  • An influencer and shaper who has led and delivered significant change successfully
  • Able to assess and understand complex situations and work through those to achieve solutions
  • Able to make connections and deliver results through others
  • A recognised performer who has the ability to understand and articulate the wider context and who can quickly achieve the respect of others
