Crown Law provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown in matters affecting the executive government. These matters include judicial review of government actions, constitutional questions including te Tiriti/Treaty of Waitangi issues, the enforcement of criminal law and the protection of revenue. Crown Law also provides leadership to several government networks.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We are currently looking for Crown Counsel (ideally with 6+ years post-qualification experience) into our Treaty team, which deals with issues with a Māori/Crown dimension, particularly in the context of te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi. We are seeking applications from lawyers who are interested in:
- working at the interface of government and te ao Māori;
- advice work, litigation, mediation and negotiation for the Crown;
- joining a diverse team of great people, who are committed to a collegial, supportive and enjoyable environment, and who care about the issues they are working on.

- strong analytical skills, practical problem-solving skills and people skills;
- strong oral and written communication skills;
- knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system and the Crown's responsibilities as a Treaty partner (or a willingness to develop and apply that knowledge and understanding).
Public sector experience is desirable but not essential.

This role is Wellington-based. Crown Law is located next to the Wellington bus and train station. We are a flexible organisation, so we'd be happy to chat about what flexible working would look like for you and how we can support that.
Remuneration and Benefits:
The starting salary range for this role is $114,585 - $187,839. The appointing salary will be based on skills and experience.
In addition, you will also receive 5 weeks' annual leave plus 3 additional leave days (Crown Law days).
