Kaiaroturuki Mātāmua | Senior Monitor at Aroturuki Tamariki - Independent Children's Monitor, Canterbury

Aroturuki Tamariki, the Independent Children's Monitor, monitors the oranga tamariki system, providing insights that drive continuous improvement and improves outcomes for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people), particularly tamariki Māori and children with disabilities.

Our Monitors are the public face of Aroturuki Tamariki.  They work in teams, engaging with the community to understand and record the experience of whānau, tamariki and rangatahi, family, professionals, caregivers and others who work with those involved in the care and protection and/or youth justice pathways. We analyse what we hear from communities we visit, alongside the nationwide data and information we collect. We use this analysis to inform our reports. 

We are looking for people with: 

  • a social work or equivalent qualification
  • a deep understanding of child protection and youth justice practice, as well as understanding the oranga tamariki system
  • an bring a risk lens to support the mahi (work) we do
  • proven ability to build meaningful connections with a wide range of people and organisations 
  • able to engage with tamariki and rangatahi and their whānau  
  • knowledge, experience, capability and understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori
  • facilitation skills  
  • strong writing skills and the ability to draft reports and other professional documents 
  • experience in providing professional support and guidance

Starting salaries are negotiated based on relevant skills and experience and we expect to offer a starting salary of between $89,622 and $112,551 for this role.
