New Zealand Police is seeking an IT Security Advisor to join its Information Security Team which is part of the Organisational Security Group. The position is located at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Papakowhai, Porirua.


The OSG provides operational IT security, information assurance, personnel and physical security advice to all of Police. The IT Security Advisor position sits within the operational IT security side of the OSG, reporting to the IT Security manager, and focuses on maintaining the security of information systems against emerging threats. The successful applicant will work alongside the Information Technology Service Centre and contribute to the prevention of unauthorised access to Police systems and provision of an accessible, secure and trusted information environment, enabling front-line Policing of New Zealand.

Technical Skills

In order to progress to an interview, the successful applicant will be able to provide written evidence of;

  • Understanding how IT security controls are identified to mitigate risks in an ICT environment. (See NZISM Publications for examples of controls -
  • Understanding how security risk assessments can be conducted in an operational ICT context (See Chapter 2,
  • Ability to assess and report on security-based information (the example information you refer to can be data and/or written information)


Special Requirements

Must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance to work in this role and therefore must also hold the right to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely.


Applicants who are offered an interview will be required, prior to the interview, to prepare a short report that focuses on either a security component or a well-publicised security vulnerability. The report should be based on information that is sourced via the internet. The specific subject and guidance for the report will be provided on invitation to attend an interview.


Additional Information

Evidence of qualifications related to this role would be an advantage but is not essential.

Successful applicant must reside within commuting distance to Porirua, Wellington.
