Job Description

The National Army Museum plays an important role in telling the story of, and protecting and caring for, New Zealand's unique military heritage and its contribution to society by:

This is your opportunity to utilise your previous experience and sound understanding of Museum collection principles; and join the National Army Museum which holds a large and unique national collection of military artefacts.

What you will do

The Senior Collections Technician will assist the Curators with the maintenance and safe custody of the National Army Museum's Collection by ensuring the artefacts are accurately identified, catalogued, and appropriately housed.

You will be required to assist in all Collection Department areas including Archives and Registration plus assist with the Exhibitions Programme as required.  You will also be responsible for the performance management of the Collections Technician including training and mentoring.

What we need

Your passion for museum collections and a demonstrable understanding of museum principles, curatorial practices, collection management practices and preventive conservation will be vital to your success in the role, along with previous experience in packing and handling museum objects. Your proven experience in manual and computerised collection management systems, preferably the Vernon system would also be important for this role; combined with your proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills will be essential to your success, along with your proven research and analytical skills that will be required to research and provide accurate information to members of the public. In this role, you will need to have proven ability to work independently using sound judgement and initiative, have the accuracy and attention to detail required and be self-motivated to achieve.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Low level Security Clearance
  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
