Job Description

What you will do

As one of four Domain Architects within our newly created Enterprise Products and Systems (EPS) team you will define the set of products and architectural building blocks (ABBs) for the End User Compute Technology Tower.

The End User Compute Tower, in which you will sit, delivers key end user assets (physical and digital) and products, across all information domains,  , that are the foundation of the Defence Information Environment (DIE). The products included in this tower are Workstations & Devices, Enterprise Applications, Mobility, Unified Communications, Application Stores, Portable Storage and Multifunction Devices.

 This is a varied and collaborative role in which you will embrace both strategic and operational activities including:

  • Ensure consistency in terms of technology, business direction and the overall enterprise architecture standards and strategy;
  • Develop deep SME understanding of the End User Compute domain within the context of NZ Defence Enterprise Architecture and all information environments and customer segments that NZDF delivers into;
  • Develop a sound understanding of the available products, solutions and services within EPS in order to provide fit-for-purpose solution architecture;
  • Play a key role in supporting the cohesion and consistency across the Defence Information Environment;
  • Contribute to the continuous development of the environment by providing innovative thinking and creativity, and supporting the standardisation of tools and products (which can be used and reused by NZDF through Reference Architectures);
  • Collaborate and communicate with your peer group to identify and mitigate impacts arising from changes to your respective products and how this will flow to other products;

You will also work closely to advise the End User Compute Product Manager (and other stakeholders) on the limitations, and impacts on the End User Compute tower relating to other domains.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are an experienced domain architect in the End User Compute domain with demonstrable experience in designing, implementing and managing solutions across a wide range of technologies within specific constraints.

 In particular you'll have:

  • Experience using architecture frameworks and methods such as TOGAF;
  • A good understanding of the available products, solutions and services within the End User Compute domain;
  • Previous knowledge of architecture and design with demonstrated leadership in a similar role;
  • The ability to build positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholder groups across the organisation;
  •  In-depth understanding of the product lifecycle;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Supportive of continual improvement activities, with a learning mind-set and the ability to adapt ways of working.

Experience working within an agile environment is highly desirable – or at least an understanding of agile methodologies.

Please note: You must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required. This position may involve out-of-hours work.

Who we are

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

 Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;
  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes;
  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.

We expect to appoint around the midpoint of the salary band for this role which is $131,616 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution. This may be negotiable depending on experience

Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!

Please note: This role will initially be based in Petone however we are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area. This means that in future you may need to be able to work in one of our other CIS offices across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.
