Job Description

What you will do

As a Senior Policy Advisor in a newly-established team, you will play a lead role in major reform of our policy landscape. Our organisation is governed by Orders – secondary legislation that applies to all 14,000 members of the New Zealand Defence Force.

While you won't be working with ministers or Cabinet, you will be working with senior military leaders. You will take the lead on all aspects of the development of our secondary legislation from the policy analysis and design through to the drafting, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and review.  You will also play an active role in supporting the Deputy Director to develop and mentor other more junior members of the team.

You will work closely with the business to establish relationships so that you can ensure that the policies for our information environment – including information and communications systems and services, information security, and communications security – are fit for purpose, accessible, meaningful and current.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are a policy professional with
  • demonstrable policy formulation experience;
  • experience developing regulations or legislation;
  • the ability to analyse technical information;
  • customer-focus, capable of building sound working relationships;
  • a growth mindset; able to adapt and learn on the way.

This is not a technical writing job; we need you to bring your critical thinking to ensure our policies enable our members to have secure access to accurate, timely, and relevant information, everywhere it is needed in order to make the right decisions.

Communication and credibility are important. You should be outwardly confident and capable of operating at senior levels within an organisation. You will have influencing and facilitation skills that help drive stakeholder alignment on priority and value.

Please note: You must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required. We are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area. In the interim you would need to be able to work from our offices in Wellington and Petone.

Who we are

More than 14,000 personnel on seven continents operate in our information environment – often in geographically remote or hostile environments, using a range of satellite and terrestrial systems. Our policy landscape must ensure our systems support mission and intelligence, as well as providing support to essential corporate functions such as Logistics, Human Resources and Finance. Most importantly, our colleagues in the Navy, Army, Airforce and Joint Forces rely on our information environment and our branch for the technology they use on platforms (e.g. planes, helicopters, vehicles, ships and military bases). We operate in operational environments, across a range of domains - including cyber – to ensure New Zealand is protected against external threats.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

Let's just say that this is not your typical policy role. You will be doing complex and challenging policy work to support a uniquely complex organisation.

By joining our team you are making a great career decision.  A recent staff satisfaction survey highlighted why:

  • Be part of an effective team with freedom and flexibility to do my job;
  • Able to maintain a balance between my personal and working life;
  • Inspired to go the extra mile to help NZDF succeed.

Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!

It's also the perfect time to join us. We are introducing major policy changes and we are in the process of transforming our culture and the way we work so we truly understand our customers and partner with them strategically.

By joining us as we transform, you will be part of a culture that endears trust, empowers decision-making and respects people.
