What you will do
As the Chief Occupational Medicine Officer, you will establish a world class military occupational health service and culture across the New Zealand Defence Force. Building on an existing occupational health capability, the role will enhance and integrate occupational health into the comprehensive health service, as outlined in the Defence Health Strategy 2025. The position will ensure that occupational health and safety is provided for NZDF personnel domestically and on operations, that NZDF meets required legal obligations and the unique occupational health challenges of NZDF can be addressed.

What we need
We are seeking a person with extensive clinical experience who can provide competent clinical services and advice to NZDF. 
Your Occupational management experience at senior management level ensures you will be able to design and implement a comprehensive multidisciplinary occupational health service, consistent with the Defence Health Strategy 2025 and the Defence Health Operating Concept 2025.
This is a strong leadership component to this role which underpins many of the key accountabilities such as:

  • Ensuring compliance and adherence to National legislation and organisational occupational health standard and policy;
  • Ensuring the delivery of specialist occupational health services (including aviation medicine, underwater diving medicine, and Ionising Radiation);
  • Leading the development and implementation of occupational health policy, guidelines, and directives;
  • Leading the development and delivery of targeted strategic occupational health promotion programmes;
  • Providing direct support to occupational health specialists, and leading.  

You have exceptional communication skills communicating respectfully, accurately and succinctly with confidence, while being able to clearly explain complex concepts across all levels of the organisation. These skills, combined with your strong interpersonal ability, allow you to build and maintain key networks with external domestic and international occupational health stakeholders, ensuring the NZ Defence Health function contributes to relevant domestic and international Working Groups and collaborative programmes. You will also chair the Health Strategy Reference Group (Occupational Health).
In terms of qualifications, we are seeking a current NZMC registration – Practising Certificate Vocational Scope - Occupational Medicine or equivalent internationally recognised registration, or equivalent occupational health related qualification at Master's level or above and an Occupational Medicine (Fellowship) e.g. FAFOEM.

Salary circa $178,526 to $236,750 dependant on skills and experience.

  • Health workforce planning;

  • Providing spiritual support;

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
