The Collections, Research & Learning Directorate is home to our core museological capabilities that collect, curate, conserve and protect Taonga, in order to deliver on Te Papa's mission as New Zealand's national museum. Physical and digital access to our collections and expertise is provided through activities spanning curatorial research, collection management and development, conservation, exhibition development, learning, public programmes and outreach. Collection, Research & Learning's strong leadership, technical expertise and ability to build enduring relationships with external agencies and communities ensures we extend accessibility and that we are recognised as a centre of museological excellence.


We have an exciting opportunity to join this team as a Public Programme Specialist. 


The Public Programmes Specialist is responsible for activating Te Papa's collections, exhibitions and resources to enrich visitors' experiences through a dynamic series of high-quality public programmes and lifelong learning opportunities.


Reporting to the Head of Public Programming, the Public Programmes Specialist is part of a team of Public Programme Specialists that work collaboratively with Exhibition, Digital and Curatorial teams, and with external partners, communities and audiences to develop, promote and deliver a coherent programme that activates public engagement with Te Papa, its collections, exhibitions, debate and discussion.


 You will be required to:


  • Develop and deliver innovative, participatory programmes that deeply engage and positively Impact Diverse audiences in lifelong learning, which ideally endures beyond a single visit or encounter.
  • Develop and deliver public programmes for exhibitions, research programmes, community outreach, and partner initiatives.
  • Define audiences, learning objectives and performance targets, and carry out audience and user research, within areas of responsibility.
  • Execute programmes that embrace Te Papa's mana taonga philosophy and identify opportunities to promote the use of te reo Māori.
  • Contribute to the establishment and realisation of public programmes strategy, systems and processes, and the development of an annual, cross-disciplinary public engagement plan that are aligned to Te Papa's strategic priorities, audiences and users, delivery channels and KPIs.
  • Some flexibility to deliver programmes outside business hours and in the weekend will be required
