We are seeking an experienced and strategic Communications Lead to lead a specialised team delivering high‑quality internal and external communications
The role
You'll lead a specialised team, shape how and when we engage with stakeholders, manage complex and sensitive issues, and ensure all communications strengthen the Commission's reputation and impact. This role plays a key leadership function, supporting managers and building communications capability across the organisation.
What you'll bring
- Proven experience leading and developing high‑performing teams
- A relevant tertiary qualification (communications, PR, journalism) or equivalent experience
- Strong expertise in communications strategy, planning, and policy development
- Demonstrated success delivering high‑quality internal, external, and media communications
- Experience providing trusted, clear advice to senior leaders and officials
- Strong media management skills, including complex and sensitive issues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence using and advising on digital, engagement, and marketing platforms
- Understanding of government operating environments and decision‑making
- A genuine commitment to cultural safety, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and ongoing development in te ao Māori
Bonus if you have
- Experience leading communications in a government or public sector environment
- Hands‑on experience managing websites and social media at an organisational level
- Strong media relationships and experience acting as a primary media contact
- Experience supporting organisational change through communications
