Permanent – Full time/part time | Wellington

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Communications Lead to lead a specialised team delivering high‑quality internal and external communications 

The role

You'll lead a specialised team, shape how and when we engage with stakeholders, manage complex and sensitive issues, and ensure all communications strengthen the Commission's reputation and impact. This role plays a key leadership function, supporting managers and building communications capability across the organisation.

What you'll bring

  • Proven experience leading and developing high‑performing teams
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (communications, PR, journalism) or equivalent experience
  • Strong expertise in communications strategy, planning, and policy development
  • Demonstrated success delivering high‑quality internal, external, and media communications
  • Experience providing trusted, clear advice to senior leaders and officials
  • Strong media management skills, including complex and sensitive issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence using and advising on digital, engagement, and marketing platforms
  • Understanding of government operating environments and decision‑making
  • A genuine commitment to cultural safety, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and ongoing development in te ao Māori

Bonus if you have

  • Experience leading communications in a government or public sector environment
  • Hands‑on experience managing websites and social media at an organisational level
  • Strong media relationships and experience acting as a primary media contact
  • Experience supporting organisational change through communications
