Are you an experienced Principal Analyst looking for a new and exciting area to work in, or are you seasoned Senior Analyst looking to make a step up? If yes, we at the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, are looking for a Principal Analyst to join our Analytics, Monitoring and Evaluation Team.

The Principal Analyst is a thought leadership position at the Ministry and is a critical role in the Analytics, Monitoring & Evaluation team. You will be working closely with your manager, the Director Analytics, Monitoring & Evaluation and other principles within the team and across the organisation to support delivery of the Ministry's work programme and priorities to build and strengthen the Ministry's evidence base. Ultimately, the role will deliver analytical insights positively influence and inform policy analysis primarily undertaken by the Ministry's Government Relations and Advisory team. It will also inform policy development undertaken by other public sector agencies.

The Principal Analyst will:

  • Uplift analytics capability maturity across the organisation.
  • Critically synthesises information from a wide variety of domains, uses expert knowledge of the data system and applies sound judgement to draw conclusions.
  • Mentor and coach other analysts, in the application of high level analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Takes responsibility for the safe, secure and ethical data acquisition and use practices. Assesses the integrity of data and carries out good information handling procedures.
  • Cultivate relationships with professional bodies, obtaining and sharing information to enhance our data analysis capability.
  • Develop dashboards, presentations and other analytical documents for publication.


The ideal candidate for this role will have

  • 5+ years' experience in data analysis, research and/or monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in collaborating with others to communicate and interpret technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Ideally, experience working with integrated data infrastructure (IDI), PowerBI, R, and/or other relevant analytical platforms and SQL tools.
  • Experience in producing high quality plain English written work.
  • An eye for accuracy and detail along with good problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to represent the Ministry at cross government subject matter expert/technical data and analytics groups such as the IDI expert users' group.
  • Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple deliverables, and deliver to deadlines.
  • Awareness and knowledge of the political process, the role of public servants, and the machinery of government.
