Job Description

  • Full-time, events based position

The National Party Leader's Office has a vacancy for a Senior Press Secretary to join their busy and driven team in Parliament. This key position is responsible for providing timely and quality information and advice to the National Party Leader and members of the Caucus.

Some of your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Advice on media and public relations issues including campaigns and MP profiles
  • Assisting with media interviews and preparation for press releases, media messages, speeches and social media
  • Identifying media opportunities and making the most of them for the Leader and MPs
  • Communication and relationship management; working closely with key media and stakeholders, ensuring they are informed of National Party positions on topical issues
  • Work in collaboration with Policy Advisors, Researchers and the Press team to ensure MPs are supported
  • Identify media risks and work with the Leader, MPs and staff to prepare for or mitigate them
  • Assist with events where MPs are speaking or making announcements.

This role is suited to someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Leadership qualities with a great attitude and willingness to work hard for the National Party
  • Extensive experience in journalism, communications and/ or public relations
  • Strong political acumen with an understanding of the NZ parliamentary environment
  • The ability to build trusted relationships with key stakeholders.

This is an events based, fixed-term role.
