Job Description

General counsel
Office of the Chief Operating Officer

We are seeking a pragmatic and enthusiastic person to join our Legal Services team in providing strategic and operational legal advice on a wide range of issues across the University. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will also work closely with senior management and assist faculties and central service units on various day-to-day legal matters (including intellectual property, contract drafting and negotiation, statutory interpretation and advice, official information, privacy, public and administrative matters, student conduct and information technology).

You will join a team whose vision is to enable Victoria, to reduce complexity, and to be trusted, valued and respected advisors. You will assist the team to present solutions, solve problems and provide efficient and pragmatic legal advice.

In additional to embodying this vision, the successful applicant will have:

  • A relevant tertiary legal qualification
  • A current New Zealand practising certificate as a Barrister and Solicitor (or ability to obtain one)
  • Experience in advising on a wide range of legal matters (including intellectual property, public and administrative law, commercial and contract law and IT law) with ideally at least five years PQE
  • Proven understanding of legal principles and practices with experience of providing these as practical advice to managers
  • Demonstrated experience in developing reports, submissions and briefing papers (including to senior leadership and governance boards)
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully leading and managing projects
  • Proven ability to work successfully across all levels of an organisation
  • Be an excellent communicator and able to build effective relationships with a wide range of people

If you are a motivated self-starter with common sense and want to be part of a challenging and stimulating work environment, then this is the role for you.
