Job Description

The Economic Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has a vacancy for an Economist. We are open to this role being filled by a recent graduate, experienced, or very experienced candidate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade ‘acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous'. This role is directed to the ‘prosperity' aspect of the Ministry's remit, and sits within its Research and Analysis Unit.

The Research and Analysis Unit supports the Ministry's trade and international economic policy by undertaking trade related research and analysis. The team leads the Building Export Markets' work-stream of the Business Growth Agenda, and works with a broad range of external facing agencies more generally to help improve NZ's international connections. The team engages heavily with the OECD.

This role is stimulating and challenging. It will prove rewarding to someone wishing to develop strong credentials around the role of international connections in NZ's economic performance. The successful candidate will have a strong economics background, a proven analytical and policy track record, relationship management skills and an ability to manage complex cross-agency processes. An understanding of how international economic agencies work and their value to New Zealand will also be valuable.

The position reports to the Manager of the Ministry's Research and Analysis Unit.

You must be a New Zealand citizen and be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate New Zealand Government security clearance.
