Promoting a confident and connected culture

Manatū Taonga – Ministry for Culture and Heritage is looking for an experienced Senior Developer to join the Research and Publishing Group to contribute to our online and print publishing projects.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

Our work in the Production team is varied and engaging. Our projects include websites Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand, and NZHistory. We publish extensively on history, culture and society, including a programme of significant commemorations, and Te Tai, a project on Treaty settlements.

Applicants should have excellent general knowledge; a wide interest in all things New Zealand; galleries, libraries, archives and museums; excellent communication skills; and a collaborative approach. Knowledge of and interest in Māori history, culture and Te Reo would be advantageous, as is a desire to tell the stories of Aotearoa on the web.

Kōrero mōu | About you

You will need a good understanding of best practise software development approaches and techniques, and the ability to transform design and technical specifications into working application code using both back-end and front-end (HTML, CSS, JS/jQuery) code as required. You will also document application code behaviour for handover purposes, develop and implement formalised methodologies and processes where required to manage the application development process, including ensuring code repositories are managed effectively.

You will have experience with the PHP programming language and associated technologies including MySQL and server administration. Experience in developing for, and administering, Drupal CMS is necessary. Experience within other content management systems, e.g., Wordpress and Silverstripe is useful. Your demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve problems will be important.

Ko wai mātou | About us

Manatū Taonga is a relatively small ministry with a broad mandate, wide reach and a big heart. With around 150 staff, we operate a lean and flat structure, with the added advantage of knowing everyone by name.

Our work is diverse – we support many of New Zealand's art, media, heritage and sports organisations; we also advise government on cultural matters and provide historical and heritage resources for everyone to access. We work to promote a confident and connected culture and to support more New Zealanders to connect with the culture and heritage of Aotearoa.
