Job Description

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is seeking a Senior Economist to lead its Research and Analysis Unit.

The Research and Analysis Unit provides economic and trade analysis to the rest of the Ministry, particularly the Trade Negotiations Division, and works with other government agencies to contribute to New Zealand's economic policy development.

You will have the ability to manage and develop people, a strong economics background, a highly analytical mind, experience operating in policy-based environments, and a keen interest in New Zealand's interactions with the world.

If you have a strong interest in lifting New Zealand's international connections, and how trade and other policy can contribute to improving living standards for all New Zealanders, we'd love to hear from you.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Leadership and management acumen, including the ability to bring out the best in others, and to coach and develop staff to ensure they deliver and progress
  • Extensive experience providing policy advice, and qualitative and quantitative economic analysis
  • An understanding of international trade theory and its relevance to the New Zealand economy
  • Curiosity about what drives and influences New Zealand's international connections

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade aspires to be a workplace that values and utilises diverse and inclusive thinking, people and behaviours. This means that our staff reflect the diversity of New Zealand and the countries we work in, and that the contributions of staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills and perspectives are valued and respected.

The Ministry values are:

Impact - We achieve for New Zealand, everyday, everywhere
