Job Description

Exciting opportunity to work on stimulating international legal issues and to be part of a great team

The Legal Division at MFAT provides legal advice to Ministers, Departments and Divisions across a range of international issues.  This advice includes the negotiation of new international instruments; the domestic implementation of international instruments; the interpretation of international legal obligations; and the enforcement of international legal obligations, including through dispute settlement action. 

The General International Law Unit of the Division provides advice across the broad range of general international law (including international criminal law, international humanitarian law, security and disarmament, space, human rights and constitutional issues).


Reporting to the Unit Manager, this role provides specialist legal advice across the range of issues within the unit, but with a likely weighting towards international humanitarian law and international criminal law, including liaison with other agencies and governments on extradition and mutual legal assistance matters. 


For the right candidate, the role can be appointed at legal adviser or senior legal adviser level.

The successful candidate will need to have relevant legal qualifications, including in international law, and subject matter expertise. 

 

You will also ideally have:

  • A good understanding of government processes, ensuring effective coordination with domestic agencies
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Experience in policy development at central government level
  • Strong planning and organising skills with proven success in delivering results

You must be able to obatin and maintain the appropriate New Zealand Government security clearence.
