Are you interested in being part of the largest event the Government has ever hosted, that brings 20 World Leaders to New Zealand?

The APEC21 planning team is looking for a Risk and Assurance Manager, a key role in the delivery of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).  We are a small but rapidly growing team, our work is varied and demanding, and your specialist risk and assurance expertise will be relied upon every day.

APEC involves a 12-month period of hosting from December 2020 to November 2021 and will bring decision-makers and leaders from across the Asia-Pacific together.  The significant opportunities for New Zealand is in promoting its economic interests with trading nations including China, the US and Japan.  Your contribution as Risk and Assurance Manager will be critical to New Zealand achieving its strategic benefits from hosting APEC.

We are in the early stages of a complex, cross-government programme and are laying the foundations to enable a large and diverse team to work effectively, and with agility.  This is an opportunity to work alongside Programme and Project managers, and to lead the Programmes risk and assurance processes from the outset. We think this is a part time role initially moving to full time closer to the event year. We would discuss and agree this transition with the right person.

To be successful in this role you will have senior level leadership and management acumen, with an ability to bring out the best performance in inter and intra-organisational teams. You will bring deep experience of assurance and risk management methodologies and practices, from both an advanced practitioner and a senior business user perspective.  If you have experience of risk and assurance management in a major events environment this would be desirable.

We are looking for a specialist leader to:

  • plan and coordinate a strategic approach to risk and quality assurance across the APEC21 programme;
  • promote, and support commitment to, the agreed APEC21 risk management policy, quality management strategy and associated governance      processes;
  • provide expert advice on risk mitigation and contingency planning;
  • regularly assess the maturity of risk and quality management processes across the programme and manage a comprehensive work stream to build the behaviours, systems, tools and processes to enable a risk intelligent and quality conscious culture.

You'll offer us your:

  • Experience in leading and managing a specialist risk and assurance function in complex, multiple organisation environments;
  • Excellent relationship management skills to work successfully with, and influence, a wide variety of stakeholders;
  • Ability to bring out the best performance in teams;
  • Strong analytical skills, high levels of judgement and decision-making skills;
  • Willingness to take on a challenge and persevere.

This is a once-every-20 year career opportunity.  We're offering a supportive and fun team environment that you can help shape.
