The Parliamentary Counsel Office is looking for a motivated and experienced editor to join our Editorial Services team. This is an opportunity to work at the heart of government and contribute to making great law for Aotearoa New Zealand.
What we do
We are the law drafting and publication office for Aotearoa New Zealand and our Government's legislative adviser. We create and maintain high-quality legislation that is easy to find and use and are stewards of our country's legislation.
The team
Editorial Services sits within our Access and Digital Services group, which provides free, ready access to up-to-date, high-quality legislation through the New Zealand Legislation website. Editorial Services delivers specialist editorial support to Parliamentary Counsel throughout the process of drafting legislation.
The role
Editors edit draft Bills, Amendment Papers, and secondary legislation and ensure drafts meet style and formatting requirements and are clear, accurate, and consistent. Editors also check that draft amendments fit correctly within the legislation being amended.
There are opportunities for career progression within the Editorial Services team.
About you
We are looking for someone with—
- demonstrated editing experience, including experience analysing language structures and format and checking facts
- knowledge of editorial practices, standards, and systems, including a commitment to plain-language principles
- knowledge and capability in te reo me ngā tikanga Māori, or a commitment to building te reo Māori skills and bicultural competency
- proven experience working collaboratively as a positive and constructive team member and actively sharing in a team's workload
- the ability to maintain positivity and a consistently high standard of work under tight deadlines that can create pressure
- a commitment to growth and to learning, sharing and applying new skills and knowledge
- a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in publishing, editing, or another relevant field.
An understanding of legislation, legislative processes and concepts, the Aotearoa New Zealand political system, and parliamentary processes would be an advantage
