Job Description

The National Leader's Office has an outstanding opportunity for an established and experienced Journalist to work at the very highest levels of our Parliamentary Media and Communications team.

This interesting and vital role will provide strategic advice to our 55 MPs in National's caucus on how to develop, communicate, and build public support for the National Opposition's vision and policy and to hold the Government to account.

Our Senior Press Secretaries are responsible for:

  • developing and delivering media events
  • generating media stories and managing media issues
  • writing key speeches and media releases
  • maintaining strong media relationships and assisting MPs with media appearances and producing other forms of communications.

Relationship skills are paramount to the success of this role where you will be a critical interface between the Press Gallery, other media outlets and continually improving the profile of the Caucus. You will be working closely with the Leader and the Opposition team to strategically manage the Leader's media schedule, work programme and travel commitments alongside working with frontbench MPs with issues and messaging on a day to day basis.

Our ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic with experience in working in political and/or media organisations. They will have credibility and high personal and professional standards.

This is a busy, full-time role, so skills in prioritising competing demands are essential. Some flexibility in hours will be required, including weekends and the role will involve domestic and international travel.

Applications close at 5pm on Tuesday, 21 May 2019.

This is an events-based, fixed-term role.
