Job Description

The National Party Leader's Office is looking for a Press Secretary to join their busy team in Parliament. This is an exciting, fast-paced role in a high-performing team and would suit someone wanting to take the next step in their media career.

Reporting to the Chief Press Secretary, you will provide timely and quality information, advice and practical support to the National Party Leader and members of the Caucus.

Some of your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Advising on media and public relations issues, including campaigns and MP profiles
  • Drafting press releases, media messages, speeches and social media
  • Identifying media opportunities and helping MPs to make the most of them
  • Working with MP offices to schedule media opportunities and preparing MPs appropriately for them
  • Providing MPs with advice on how to drive media campaigns
  • Working in collaboration with Policy Advisors, Researchers and colleagues in the Media and Communications team to ensure MPs are well supported
  • Identifying media risks and work with MPs and staff to prepare for or mitigate them

This role is suited to someone who has:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent industry experience working in journalism and/ or communications or public relations
  • The ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong political acumen with an understanding of the NZ parliamentary and media environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to Members of Parliament, media and external stakeholders as well as your colleagues
  • Advanced information, communication and technology skills.

This is a full-time role. Some flexibility in hours will be required and the role will involve some domestic travel.

This is an events-based, fixed-term role.
