Job Description

  • Two roles (one permanent; one fixed-term for six months approximately)
  • Research and advise on parliamentary practice, policy and procedure
  • Opportunity to work in an exciting and innovative environment
  • Flexible working potential

Does the idea of gaining first-hand insight into the workings of Parliament appeal to you? If so, make your next career move to the Office of the Clerk.

The Office of the Clerk provides advisory and secretariat services to the House of Representatives, including advice on specialist parliamentary procedure. We have two opportunities to join the Parliamentary Law and Practice team. The team comprises legal and non-legal staff and has a busy and varied workload.

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Researching and advising on ways to make Parliament operate more effectively
  • Advising internal and external people on parliamentary practice and procedure and legislative quality issues
  • Updating procedural resources, such as the Standing Orders, Speakers' Rulings and McGee's Parliamentary Practice in New Zealand

We're looking for people with a passion for Parliament and constitutional issues. You'll have a good knowledge of parliamentary practice and procedure, or the ability to quickly develop this. You'll be an effective and clear oral and written communicator with well-developed research and advisory skills.

We offer a supportive environment that's right at the centre of Parliamentary activity. We are also willing to consider secondments and a full range of flexible working options for the right person or persons.

Applications close midnight Wednesday, 28 August 2019.
