Job Description

The National Leaders Office has a fantastic opportunity for a talented Policy Advisor to work at the very highest levels of our Parliamentary team. This is a chance for an ambitious policy professional to take their career to a new level and experience working in the engine-room of the political process in an exciting, fast-paced and influential role.

The successful applicant will support the National Leader and MPs by analysing and developing responses to government policy announcements, and supporting the development of National's overall policy platform. The Policy team also respond to daily requests for analysis and advice, so the senior policy advisor needs to be highly organised and ensure your consistently working to a high standard.

You will have proven excellent analytical skills, a demonstrated track record in policy development, ability to develop solutions to complex policy issues are critical to this role.

This is a busy, full-time role, so the ability to prioritise competing demands and work collaboratively are essential. Some flexibility in hours will be required and the role will involve some domestic travel.

Essential knowledge and skills for the role:

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills - able to come up to speed quickly with new issues, examine them from all sides, and recommend a proposed evidence-based solution
  • Very strong written communication ability, complemented with sound numerical skills
  • Political acumen and a good understanding of the New Zealand parliamentary environment, as well as party policies and positions
