Te Papa stands proud as an iconic national building housing the treasures of the nation and is a vibrant destination for both national and international visitors. Tākina Events is an operational function of the Museum and Commercial Services Directorate of Te Papa.
Te Papa is looking for an experienced Pastry Chef to prepare a variety of desserts, pastries and other sweet goods. Your skill in baking high quality treats should be matched by present industry trends and a creative flair. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in culinary arts with a passion for sweet and delicious creations and a proven track record in a high-volume Pastry Section.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Minimum 5 years commercial cooking experience and knowledge supported with Chef/Culinary Qualifications
- The ability to work under pressure
- Organisation skills and ability to prioritise work according to agreed targets and urgent demands
- Ability to create a positive team environment
- A good ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Good working knowledge of all local and government legislation regarding hygiene and safe working conditions
- The ability to think laterally and to make sound, informed decisions
- Preferably experience in a multi outlet hospitality operation, from restaurant to function catering
We operate 7 days a week therefore your flexibility to work over a 7-day roster including Public Holidays and weekend work are essential criteria for suitability. Along with Te Papa's cafes and on-site function venues, we operate restaurants and café outlets at Parliament, Circa Theatre and other venues, therefore we are seeking crew members who can be flexible in their work location. The work across our operation is busy, fast paced and in a fantastic, friendly team environment, so come join us!
The salary range for this position is $47,450 to $60,163 with further room for progression through the band. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.

From 1 July 2022 appointment to a position at Te Papa will require a declaration of Vaccination Status (confirmation that you are currently ‘up to date' with vaccination against COVID 19 or, you are not currently vaccinated or ‘up to date' with vaccination against COVID-19). Future appointees will also need to agree to comply with any future Government or Te Papa mandates or requirements relating to vaccination against COVID-19.
