Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service are now hiring for full-time and part-time Assistant Customs Officers in Auckland.

 

Customs is implementing exciting changes designed to modernise and improve border services and security. The Assistant Customs Officer is a brand new role that will support these changes by introducing a role focused on providing exceptional customer service.

 

Join us and you'll play a key front line role in welcoming and administering the movement of people across New Zealand's border in a dynamic and fast paced environment.  

 

As an Assistant Customs Officer you'll bring high levels of integrity, honesty and discretion. You'll be highly customer focused and will communicate to a wide range of people to ensure passengers receive an outstanding customer experience. You'll be available to work a 24/7 schedule, with shifts including weekends and public holidays.

 

Your role will be primarily based at Auckland International Airport although flexibility will be required to work in other work areas in Mangere. The starting salary for this position is $40,429 per annum (full time equivalent). An hours of work allowance of up to $6,000 per annum is also available dependent on the work schedule.

 

In your first 2 weeks you'll be required to complete a comprehensive training programme where you'll learn through classroom, on-the-job training and assessments setting you up for success.

 

When you've successfully completed the training this role involves:



    • Directing and processing passengers through Customs. This requires being able to sit in a booth for long periods of time or standing up for long periods assisting passengers.

 

    • Ensuring passengers meet immigration requirements and knowing when to escalate situations

 

    • Administrative duties such as collecting, counting, sorting and recording Arrival and Departure cards

 

    • Supporting a wider team in protecting New Zealand



To be considered for this role you must:



    • Be a NZ Citizen or a NZ Permanent Residency (with no conditions);

 

    • Have a full class 1 NZ motor vehicle drivers' license;

 

    • Have great communication skills both writing and verbal;

 

    • Be flexible to work across Auckland;

 

    • Be confident navigating around computers;

 

    • Have a good level of fitness and physical ability so you can complete the full range of duties in the role.



All candidates need to be able to meet the following security requirement prior to applying for a vacancy:



    • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years, OR

 

    • Be a Permanent Resident of New Zealand, who has resided continuously in NZ and preferably in one or more of the following countries for the last 5 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
