About the Ministry for Regulation
The Ministry for Regulation is a newly established small government agency with a big job to do.
We're here to improve the quality of regulation so all New Zealanders can flourish. We lead the regulatory management system (the set of policies, institutions, processes and tools employed by central government to pursue and maintain good quality regulation) and contribute to the design and operation of individual regulatory systems.
We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.
About the Roles
The Ministry has two Principal Advisor, Policy opportunities in the Regulatory Policy Design Team, within the Policy Group.
The core functions of the Regulatory Policy Design Team are to:
- Oversee and run the regulatory impact analysis system
- Provide second-opinion advice on significant regulatory proposals across government.
The Principal Advisor, Policy roles will focus on providing second-opinion advice on significant regulatory policy proposals. These key positions are responsible for delivering complex policy advice, overseeing work programmes, and providing thought leadership.
About you
We are looking for someone with experience in public policy, including regulatory policy, and a good understanding of economics. You will have excellent critical thinking, communication and relationship-building skills, along with a proven ability to work collaboratively in delivering complex and impactful policy advice.
Additionally, you will bring:
- Strong written and verbal skills, and numerical literacy, with the ability to simplify and clearly communicate complex issues and concepts
- Quick learning agility with the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge on diverse policy issues
- A good understanding of the machinery of government
- A demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and support other team members
- Proven experience managing complex projects
- Sound judgement, political nous and strategic agility
- Proven experience in collaborating with stakeholders to maintain trusted relationships
- A passion in driving professional development of team members
- Experience in building strong cross-agency and system connections that achieve enhanced outcomes.

Salary range: $127,142 - $168,973 dependent on skills and experience.
