Sector Advisor

The Office of the Auditor-General | Te Mana Arotake(the Office) is focused on significantly enhancing its influence and impact on the public sector to deliver better results for Aotearoa New Zealand. The Office is dedicated to making a difference to the lives of New Zealanders, by helping to continuously improve the public's trust in public services and the value those services deliver.

We're establishing a stronger presence in Auckland to ensure that the Office is well versed on Auckland-specific challenges facing the public sector and to provide timely advice and strategic assistance to the leadership team on Auckland issues. We're looking for a Sector Advisor to be based in Auckland, reporting to the Sector Manager, Auckland. You'll be an important part of our new Auckland team and our Sector Advisers team, which is focused on improving performance and accountability across the public sector.

As Sector Advisor you'll support Sector Managers in managing their portfolios and be the main contact for a portfolio of smaller public entities. You'll be aware of the contextual and strategic environment in which entities operate, and you'll be responsible for responding to a range of enquiries from appointed auditors, members of Parliament, public sector employees, and the public. You'll support the Sector Manager, Auckland to deliver high-quality strategic advice on Auckland public sector issues and to manage relationships with main Auckland public entities.

You'll also be a valuable contributor to the Office of the Auditor-General's products and services, including sector reports, performance audits, inquiries, and select committee briefings. You'll have a key role managing information in support of collaboration between teams across the Office.

To be successful in the role, you'll have:

  • a tertiary qualification and at least two years' experience in the public sector or relevant private sector role;
  • an understanding of New Zealand's system of government, the role of Parliament, and the role of the Auditor-General within the system;
  • knowledge of the Auckland public sector environment;
  • comfort with technical and data-driven processes and experience in public, financial, or performance management; and
  • sound relationship management skills.
