Job Description

Claimant Support Specialists - Multiple Permanent and Fixed Term Roles

Make a real difference in this customer-centric role working and supporting claimants who have been unjustly treated in State care, in particular the care of Child, Youth and Family and its predecessors

  • Newly established roles focused on providing high quality customer-centric service
  • Highly culturally competent - Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori
  • Working closely with people to support them through the Historic claims process
  • Role will require frequent travel within New Zealand

About this role

The Claimant Support team helps claimants through the Historic claims process and is the primary point of contact for them.  As a member of this dynamic and innovative team, you will provide end to end support from the initial point of contact, through to the completion of each claim. Specifically you will provide support to claimants by listening about their experience in care, answering any questions they may have about their time in care and ensuring claimants are provided with the necessary support when they need it, while their claim is being considered. You will do this directly as well as by supporting the Senior Support Specialists.

As these roles involve working closely with claimants in their home locations, two of the new positions will have significant travel outside of Wellington . In some months this could be up to 50% of the working week. The other positions will not have this requriement.

We are looking for people who:

  • are culturally responsive and have a sound understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori
  • can demonstrate excellent team work
  • have proven experience effectively working with individuals affected by multiple issues
  • are able to make connections with people quickly and can engage with them in genuinely meaningful ways
  • can use their creativity and innovative flair to deliver the results we seek.

If this sounds like you then take a look at our Position Description and please apply!

We are expecting to hold interviews between 9th February 2020 and 21st February 2020. If you would like to know more about this role, please send us an email to:

About the Historic Claims Team

MSD is responsible for the Historic Claims process.  The Historic Claims team works with people who have been unjustly treated in State care, in particular the care of Child, Youth and Family and its predecessors, to address their concerns without them needing to resort to civil litigation.

MSD recently reviewed the way the historic claims process worked, undertaking a robust and far reaching consultation with current and previous claimants and key stakeholders. This has resulted in a commitment to growing and adjusting the Historic Claims team with a focus on operating within the principles of Tikanga Māori; Mana, Aroha, Whakapapa, Whānaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Pono.

We are now recruiting the core members of the team.  This team will be made up of highly culturally-responsive people who are specialists in their field.
