Job Description

At the Ministry of Defence, our diverse team of people provide the Government with civilian advice on defence matters, and also act as the Government's principal civilian advisor on the international strategic defence environment and on our country's interests.

About the role

Our Finance team focusses on delivering exceptional customer service and providing financial planning, evaluating financial performance and providing insight to make decisions that assist in delivering the Ministry's strategic objectives. Your role plays a key part in this by partnering with budget holders to provide timely, accurate, expert financial advice and analysis and by also improving financial control and developing their financial capability. This diverse role also includes assisting with CFIS reporting, payroll and tax.

The right candidate will be given the opportunity to develop their public sector financial and management reporting skills working in our small finance team.

Skills and experience required

While it would be advantageous to have previous public sector knowledge and experience, what's most important to us is your ability to build trusted stakeholder relationships and use your excellent communication skills to engage with experts and non-financial audiences. You'll thrive in a dynamic work environment, be proactive and solutions focussed in your work, with a willingness to add value to work performed for the Ministry.

Our successful candidate with also have:

  • Strong analytical ability that can contribute to financial strategic thinking.
  • Professional knowledge and technical competence in financial and management accounting principles and practices (GAAP).
  • Strong computer skills (particularly in the Microsoft suite of applications) and the ability to pick up new systems and processes quickly.
  • A tertiary qualification in accounting (being a CA, or equivalent, or nearly qualified would be desirable).

For this role it means candidates must have been a New Zealand citizen or a citizen of the United Kingdom, Canada, United States or Australia, for at least the past 10 years. For our security clearance purposes, you must also be able to work in New Zealand. This means you must have a minimum of New Zealand permanent residency status, as well as being a citizen of one of the above countries.
