Job Description

Health Economist

  • Stimulating work environment with a world-leading organisation
  • Assess new health technologies against PHARMAC's clinical and economic criteria
  • Full-time one year fixed term role - Wellington, NZ

Health economists play a critical role at PHARMAC, responsible for health technology assessments in medicines and devices. You'll work closely with PHARMAC's clinical advisors and negotiation teams to determine which products offer the best value to the New Zealand health system. This is a unique opportunity in a challenging and rewarding field. In this role you will:

  • Evaluate supplier proposals and develop new cost-utility analyses of medicines and devices being assessed for funding
  • Gather, synthesise, critically appraise and present clinical information; build and document pharmaco-economic models; and analyse health outcome and cost data

We are also open to considering a secondment.

Skills & qualifications

This role is your chance to apply your economic and quantitative analysis skills to work that is stimulating, varied and directly informs health funding decisions. You will:

  • Be an experienced health economist or perhaps be interested in developing a career in health technology assessment building on your skills in any of micro-economics, finance, research and evaluation, biostatistics, epidemiology or similar quantitative disciplines
  • Possess strong modelling ability and strong written and oral communication skills with the confidence to present complex issues to clinicians and other non-economists.

The work environment

Our health economics team is a manager and 6 staff. Take a look at the Our People area of our website to see the profile for one of our Health Economists. One of the team is covering maternity leave in the Pharmaceutical Funding Team, which creates a full-time Health Economist or Senior Health Economist position for 12 months fixed term. We are also open to considering a secondment.
