Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Principal Solicitor

Are you driven to provide high-quality legal advice? Are you interested in the performance of the public sector? Are you keen to share your expert legal skills, knowledge, and experience? If so, then this could be the next step in your career.

The Office of the Auditor-General is looking for a Principal Solicitor for its small, in-house legal team.

The legal team supports the Auditor-General in his role providing independent assurance and reporting about public sector activities as an officer of Parliament under the Public Audit Act 2001.

The Auditor-General's mandate covers over 3000 organisations and the entire public sector, so the work is varied and interesting.

As Principal Solicitor in the team, you'll be the Office's technical legal expert. The role involves:

providing in-house legal services to the Office of the Auditor-General, Audit New Zealand, and other auditors working on behalf of the Auditor-General;

  • administering the provisions of the Local Authorities (Members' Interests) Act 1968; and
  • participating in and providing advice on all other operational and corporate work (including procurement); and
  • supervising and mentoring other members of the Legal team, ensuring all legal advice provided by them is accurate, consistent, and of high quality.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • a tertiary qualification in law;
  • eligibility to obtain a practising legal certificate;
  • excellent knowledge of the parliamentary and public sector environment; and
  • at least 10 years' experience in legal work, preferably with some experience in the public sector.

As an organisation, people matter to us, our independence is critical, we act with integrity, and we're here to make a difference.

We offer our staff:

  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • Health and well-being benefits.
  • Flexible working.

The Office of the Auditor-General is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to tell us when you apply so that we can assist you through the recruitment process.

For more information, please contact Belinda Rynhart on +64 21 222 6312 or email recruitment@oag.parliament.nz.
