Are you interested in working and studying to become a fully trained Fingerprint Officer?


A vacancy exists within the Wellington Fingerprint Section for an entry level position, an Assistant Fingerprint Officer, based at Wellington Central Police Station. The section provides a service to Wellington, Central and Eastern Police Districts which covers a large geographical area spanning from Wellington up to Taranaki and across to Southern Hawkes Bay.


The Trainee position involves a five year career training and development programme. You will need to commit to a programme of study and to pass practical, theory and oral examinations on a regular basis. A Diploma in the Science of Fingerprints is awarded on successful completion of the programme. You will also need to attend some short block courses in Wellington as well as work away from Wellington from time to time.


The successful candidate will be required to: work in an office, a laboratory, attend all manner of crime scenes (occasionally at the weekend), the mortuary, and give evidence in court.

Skills you will have:

  • Demonstrate ability to make analysis, comparison, and evaluation of fingerprints to make fingerprint identifications.
  • Demonstrate ability to prepare trace files and maintain a trace register.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist with training delivery and presentations to Police personnel and other agencies.
  • Demonstrates experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with team members and Police colleagues.


Special Requirements

The preferred applicant will:

  • Have a tertiary degree in science, forensic papers an advantage
  • Be medically fit with excellent eyesight
  • Have a minimum of level 3 NCEA passes in Chemistry and / or Science or the equivalent
  • Have an aptitude for science and technical work
  • Have a practical computing and sound English language skills


Additional Information

  • Successful applicants will also need to have no criminal record, to pass a detailed security clearance check
  • Successful applicant must reside in Wellington
  • As part of the interview process, shortlisted applicants may undergo a practical, visual aptitude test.
