About us

The Ministry for Regulation is a small government agency with a big job to do.

We're focused on lifting quality across all regulatory systems and supporting agencies with regulatory responsibilities to align with good practice. We want it to be easier for businesses to innovate, grow and comply, while still ensuring the benefits from regulation that we take for granted won't change.

We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.

About the Role

We are seeking experienced Principal Advisors to join our Policy Group.

As Principal Advisor, Policy, you'll lead and deliver authoritative policy advice on complex, high‑impact issues. You'll help shape policy direction, oversee work programmes, and provide thought leadership that supports the Ministry's strategic direction. Working closely with colleagues and stakeholders across government, you'll apply deep policy expertise and professional judgement to deliver robust, influential advice in a dynamic environment.

You will operate with a high degree of autonomy and contribute to the Ministry's broader strategic direction.

About you

You bring extensive experience in public policy, including work in complex or cross‑agency environments. You are recognised for your policy craft, critical thinking and ability to influence at senior levels.

You will also bring:

  • Strong experience leading complex policy work from problem definition through to delivery

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex issues

  • The confidence to provide constructive challenge and advice at a senior level

  • A collaborative, inclusive approach and a track record of building trusted relationships

  • A genuine interest in improving regulatory quality and public sector outcomes.

Experience in regulatory policy, regulatory systems, or economic analysis will be highly valued, but the role can be shaped to fit your particular strengths within the Policy Group.

What we can offer you

  • The opportunity to influence regulatory quality and system‑level outcomes

  • Varied, meaningful work in a central agency context

  • A supportive, professional team that values expertise, learning and collaboration

  • Flexible working options.

If you're passionate about improving regulatory systems and influencing policy at the highest level, we'd love to hear from you.
