Te Puni Kōkiri (the Ministry of Māori Development) works within government and communities to achieve its vision of Thriving Whanau. The wellbeing of whānau, hapū and iwi is the central focus of the organisation. It leads policy and legislative change; influences the mahi of others by bringing a Māori voice to decision-makers; and activates, connects and invests in programmes that enable sustained Māori development.

We are looking for a highly experienced leader to be the next Toihautū (Chief Executive) of Te Puni Kōkiri. This person must be able to influence the environment in which Te Puni Kōkiri operates; providing leadership to other government departments, community groups, and iwi to pursue and shape a public sector that is effective for Māori.

Te Puni Kōkiri is the chief policy advisor to the Government regarding Public Service design and outcomes for Māori. The Toihautū must be a credible and trusted advisor to Ministers and leaders, giving confidence and assurance to critical policy priorities. The Toihautū will steer the organisation to new heights, seeing it emerge as a modern and agile policy and monitoring advisor. The Toihautū must be skilled in appreciation and application of Māori cultural identity and cultural values, and have an understanding and respect of Te Reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and kaupapa Māori.

Excellent leadership by Public Service chief executives is essential to high performing departments and a high performing Public Service. Chief executives are required to work collaboratively in a spirit of service and strive towards the overall goal of a system of world class, professional State Services, serving the Government of the day and meeting the needs of all New Zealanders.
