Outstanding opportunity for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to work with a team of experts that deliver precision optics to the astronomy industry

KiwiStar Optics is a business unit of Callaghan Innovation who have the ability to design and manufacture optics and their mechanical housings, and the assembly and precision alignment of optical systems. KiwiStar's projects are often astronomy focussed and can range from optical equipment in the some of the world's largest telescopes, through to high-resolution spectrographs.

As Team Leader: Opto-Mechanical, you will build, monitor and manage performance of the operations of KiwiStar Optics (KSO), against the current business plan. In consultation with the KSO Manager, and Team Leader - Optical Manufacturing you will contribute to operational procedures, objectives and initiatives. You will provide technical project management for our large projects, work closely with all KSO staff to coordinate the different elements of these large projects and provide strong technical project management skills to ensure these projects are completed on time and to budget. Your manufacturing and opto-mechanical engineering experience and knowledge or interest in astronomy, will position you to actively support bid management and overall tender responses.

To be suitable for this position, you will some of the following attributes/experience:

  • Degree in opto-mechanical engineering, at Masters level preferably
  • Ideally at least five years working in a technical business environment
  • Experience with project management and managing staff
  • Experience in developing proposals and bids in a scientific or technical market
  • Experience operating in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with CNC equipment and optical design software, will be an advantage
  • Capable use of MS Office products, proficient at MS Project.
  • Business qualifications, preferable but not essential
  • Knowledge of or an interest in astronomy will be an advantage
