Job Description

We have two fantastic opportunities to become a Research Technician with the Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL) team working in a fast-paced, customer oriented, team laboratory environment.

MSL is an international leader in a number of areas of measurement including; measurement of fundamental constants; state of the art measurement techniques; realisations of physical measurement standards; and improved industrial measurement techniques.

As a Research Technician you will be involved and become an expert in the calibration and testing for New Zealand industry. Each of the opportunities will have a different focus so if you are interested in exploring either further please select which vacancy you are interested in.

Research Technician, Length and Dimensional Measurement (Ref # 6642)

You will be involved and become an expert in the calibration, testing and development of length measuring systems and instruments for NZ. These include time scales, laser interferometers, electronic distance meters, gauge blocks and high accuracy coordinate measuring machines.

The successful candidate in this role will have:

  • BSc or other technical qualification in physics and/or engineering experience
  • experience in 3D problem solving (eg: CAD, CNC, CMM)
  • skills in optics, mechanical and electronic design, (instrument control and programming would be preferable)
  • the ability to present technical information to groups and respond to questions.

Research Technician, Electricity and Time (Ref # 6624)

This role is responsible for facilitating global recognition of tests and measurements of electricity and time. You will be required to meet the national needs for measurement and increased demands of health and environment measures.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • technical qualification in physics and/or engineering with an electrical element
  • previous experience of technical apparatus, including electronics and computer control of equipment
  • effective design and construction skills and experience
  • working knowledge of Python or similar software.

In addition to this you will demonstrate: an excellent ability to manage and plan your own workload; strong analytical skills; focus on finding solutions for problems; superior attention to detail and the ability to effectively communicate with a wider range of stakeholders to build strong relationships.
