Job Description

Are you looking for an opportunity to apply your outstanding technical and business management expertise to the manufacture of world-leading optical components? If so, an exciting opportunity is available in our Gracefield, Lower Hutt, location.

We are looking for an exceptional manager for KiwiStar Optics - a business unit within the Commercial group. KiwiStar provides a unique total system integration package, with the ability to design and manufacture optics and their mechanical housings, and the assembly and precision alignment of optical systems, including precision spectrographs, very large lenses and mirrors.

As the successful candidate, you will be running a business unit with 8-10 people, and have overall accountability and responsibility for the leadership and management of KiwiStar service capability, delivery, people, financial, and resourcing functions. You will lead the ongoing innovation of products and services within the KiwiStar team and lead delivery of integrated projects and solutions for customers. Your commitment to quality and passion for exceeding your customer's expectations will ensure your accomplishment in this role.

To be successful in this position you will need the following skills and experience:

  • Advanced business and project management skills
  • Excellent decision-making ability and judgement
  • Superior communication skills, with the ability to deal professionally with people at all levels
  • Strong and realistic financial, commercial and contract management skills are a prerequisite
  • A strong technical background in science, engineering and/or manufacturing
  • An interest in astronomy or optics and a broad understanding of the scientific and technological capabilities, innovations and advancements in KiwiStar's market
  • A successful track record in product design and development projects, including the ability to work to tight project timelines and within approved budgets
  • Proven ability to represent the organisation at all levels
  • Proven ability to effectively manage employees and external business contacts while conveying a positive, service-oriented attitude
  • A successful track record of adhering to and/or implementing and maintaining an effective quality management system
  • Excellent people leadership skills and a practical hands-on attitude, working as one-of-the-team as required
