Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

A great job you never knew existed

The Office of the Auditor-General | Te Mana Arotake aims to improve trust and confidence in public services by giving New Zealanders an independent view of government spending and performance. As the statutory auditor of all public organisations, from councils to schools, the Auditor-General's work plays a major part in ensuring that our public sector remains one of the most trusted in the world.

If you're passionate about making a difference to the lives of New Zealanders, performance auditing could be a new career path for you. Performance audits are not financial in nature – instead, they focus on getting to the heart of issues that are important to New Zealanders. During the next few years, we'll be looking at a range of topics including climate change, misinformation, integrity, and value for money. You can read more about our work programme in our annual plan: oag.parliament.nz/2025/annual-plan

You can also hear directly from our performance auditors about what they do on our Youtube channel: youtube.com/@officeoftheauditor-general3997/videos

We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Performance Auditor anda Senior Performance Auditor. In theseroles, you'll be leading performance audits on the Auditor-General's behalf or assisting others in the team as required. From day to day, you could be carrying out fieldwork across the motu, meeting with frontline public servants and politicians, or briefing select committees. It's a challenging and varied role that gives you a unique view of the public sector.

We'd love to hear from you, especially if you have experience in:

  • leading large research or evaluation projects in the public sector;
  • leading public policy development;
  • contributing to significant government reviews or inquiries; or
  • working with iwi and Māori.

Along with listing the role(s) you're interested in, please briefly describe in your cover letter:

  • how you've applied your analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • significant reports that you've written or contributed to; and
  • significant pieces of work that you've led, managed, and delivered.

If you're applying for the role of Principal Performance Auditor, please also tell us how you've influenced and added value to a topic or issue, supported the growth and development of colleagues, and motivated others towards change that aligns with an organisation's strategy.

We offer our staff:

  • Ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Supportive hybrid working arrangements (flexible hours/days).
  • Health and well-being benefits.
  • A unique operating environment with Parliament.
