Quality Improvement Manager at Controller and Auditor - General, Flexible Location

The Controller and Auditor-General aims to improve trust and confidence in public services by giving New Zealanders an independent view of government spending and performance. As the statutory auditor of all public organisations, from councils to schools, the Auditor-General's work plays a major part in ensuring that our public sector remains one of the most trusted in the world.
We are looking for a Quality Improvement Manager to support and strengthen the system of quality management across audit and assurance work carried out on behalf of the Auditor-General.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Quality Improvement, this role plays a key part in providing assurance to the Auditor-General about the quality of audit, assurance and related work. You will contribute to the design, operation and continuous improvement of the system of quality management, undertake quality reviews, and provide authoritative advice on audit quality, standards and ethics.
The role has a strong improvement focus and works closely with internal teams, audit service providers and external stakeholders to drive consistent, high-quality outcomes across the audit system.
In this role, you will:
- Undertake and contribute to quality reviews of audit and assurance work.
- Support and continuously improve the system of quality management.
- Provide specialist advice on audit, ethical standards and their application.
- Identify common quality issues and using insights to inform guidance, training and interventions.
- Contribute to submissions and working groups on changes to quality and ethical standards.
- Building strong, trusted relationships across the Office, audit firms and external stakeholders.
To succeed in this role, you'll have:
- At least five years practical external audit experience, ideally including experience of auditing public sector entities.
- Strong knowledge of audit, assurance, quality and ethical standards and their application.
- Sound analytical skills and professional judgment, with the ability to maintain independence and confidentiality.
- The ability to plan and manage tasks independently, prioritise and manage workload, and consult and negotiate with others.
- Proven ability to influence, collaborate and build effective working relationships.
- A tertiary qualification in auditing or accounting, and Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ) or equivalent professional body.
